Tuesday, September 9, the History department will co-sponsor a special screening of Tula, the Revolt, a 2013 film about the leader of the 1795 slave uprising on the island of Curacao. The screening is presented by the United Nations Remembrance Programme of he Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and will be followed by a discussion with one of the film’s stars, Danny Glover. History Major Explores the Development of Coney Island in Summer Research Project
Since the 1880s, millions of visitors have flocked to the amusements entertainment venues of Coney Island. It is a New Yorker’s dream: a place where the greatest urban metropolis meets the beauty of the seashore. Although it has been the topic of many books and documentaries, few have studied the planning proposals that shaped the Coney Island we know today. Fordham History major Priscilla Consolo (LC ’16), who grew up ten minutes from Coney Island, wanted to learn how this neighborhood and holiday spot came to be. She wrote to us with a description of the fascinating research project she conducted last summer.

PhD Student Alessandro Saluppo Published in Mondoperaio
Congratulations to our PhD student Alessandro Saluppo, whose article Lotta di classe nel Delta. Dove nasce lo squadrismo has appeared in Mondoperaio, a prestigious Italian journal of politics and culture. The article examines the origins and dynamics of fascist violence in the province of Ferrara. Alessandro wrote to us with an abstract of the article in English.

Novikoff Speaks in Israel on Medieval Debates and Religious Conversion
Dr. Alex Novikoff (Medieval History) will be delivering a 30-minute invited lecture, “Are Jewish-Christian Disputations a Source of Conversion?” at Ben Gurion University in Israel this coming week. The symposium, entitled “Debating Conversion in Different Historical Contexts,” from 26-29 May, is the inaugural conference at BGU’s new Center for the Study of Conversion and Inter-Religious Encounters, a project sponsored by I-CORE (Israeli Centers of Research Excellence).

Workshop on Teaching Philosophy Statements- Tuesday May 20 at 10AM
The History Department will host a workshop on Developing Statements of Teaching Philosophy on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to be held in the Walsh Library Electronic Information Center (Computer Lab 044). Light refreshments will be available before the workshop with lunch to follow.
Dr. Paul Beaudin, Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Science and Associate Professor of Education at Iona College, will offer a 3-hour workshop for graduate students.
The workshop will begin with a presentation on curriculum and pedagogy and then lead to discussions on the work of several educational theorists. Participants will conduct on-the-spot, online research, discuss teaching philosophies with faculty and fellow graduate students, and then write and receive feedback on their own statements of teaching philosophy.
If you have already written a statement of teaching philosophy, please come and refine it further. If you haven’t already written a statement, you will leave this workshop with a good working draft. Either way, this workshop will develop your grasp of the philosophy of teaching and further prepare you for the job search and interview process. Please come and participate in this important department workshop.
