On October 9th Dr. Scott Bruce, who recently joined Fordham’s History Department, sat down with Dr. Richard Gyug, Professor Emeritus of History and Medieval Studies, to discuss Dr. Bruce’s forthcoming article in Speculum, titled “The Dark Age of Herodotus: Shards of a Fugitive History in Early Medieval Europe.”

Medieval England Conference Recap
On April 24th and 25th, the History Department sponsored the Medieval England Conference that showcased the research done in the Graduate ProSeminar Course led by Dr. Maryanne Kowaleski. This conference included papers by members of the History Department, as well as the Center for Medieval Studies. Patrick DeBrosse, Rachel Podd, Amanda Racine, and Ron Braasch were the 3 doctoral and master’s students, respectively, that presented their research. History Undergrads Present Their Research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium
Three undergraduate History students were chosen to present their research at the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 11. Dr. Elizabeth Penry, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the History Department who moderated the panel, reported that the presentations were excellent and that all three were based on extensive original research in primary sources. Twilight Capitalists: The Global Cold War and the Unmaking of Post-War Capitalism
On the evening of Thursday, March 8th, the History Department opened its O’Connell Initiative Annual Conference titled “The United States and Global Capitalism in the Twentieth Century” with Dr. Vanessa Ogle as it’s keynote speaker. Dr. Ogle is a professor of History at University of California-Berkeley with a focus on late-modern Europe. Faculty, graduate and undergraduate students alike filled the McNally Amplitheatre to hear Dr. Ogle’s talk, titled “Twilight Capitalists: The Global Cold War and the Unmaking of Post-War Colonialism”. O’Connell Initiative Book Launch Event: Yuko Miki
Tuesday, February 27th, the History Department celebrated the launch of Dr. Yuko Miki‘s new book, Frontiers of Citizenship: A Black and Indigenous History of Postcolonial Brazil. Dr. Miki, an Assistant Professor in the History Department, is an expert on Brazil and teaches classes on Latin America at the Lincoln Center Campus. The event was sponsored by the O’Connell Initiative on the Global History of Capitalism. Dr. Miki’s book, published by Cambridge University Press, demonstrates that to understand modern Brazil one must understand the histories of the African Diaspora, as well as those of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
